HandsOffLSE is a student-led campaign that aim to raise awareness on the urgency of sexual harassment and misconduct support, and to push LSE in creating better policies in supporting victims and survivors in the LSE community.

First, we identify that there are inadequate support from the school for victims and survivors of sexual misconduct within the LSE community.

from the current support, we could highlight some issues:

  • 1 person from Rape Crisis UK available only once a month for 3 appointments and this is limited to only female survivors

  • Not all safe contacts are well-trained on handing sexual misconduct cases and information on which safe contact are trained for it are scattered

  • Limited legal and administrative support for survivors to punish their perpetrators

  • Limited mental and emotional support for survivors

  • No consent training for LSE students

We are also aware of how students experience poor response and support by the school when victims tried accessing these resources, such as not hearing anything back from the report they submitted, having referred to multiple point of contacts which disallow single disclosure principle.

Other universities in the UK has not only a staff, but a team of staff specifically hired to handle sexual misconduct cases in their community. They also have a consent training available for student and staff as an act of prevention. Below are the websites we could refer to as a comparison:

Second, information about how to seek help and procedures of reporting are hard to navigate.

There is no clear procedure informed and socialised to the student/staff. Safe contact and information about sexual violence are registered under “bullying” and mixed with non-sexual reporting and support. This makes it unclear and vague on what support the school could provide.

(with this in mind, our team had compiled a summary of the current procedures and linked each website to ease you in seeking help from the school                  )

With these situations in mind, we therefore asks the LSE directorate to

1. Hire a Sexual Misconduct Employee by Lent Term 2021

hiring a staff specialised in handling sexual misconduct cases and report would provide a safe point contact for victims, implement single disclosure principle and improve the overall procedure of reporting.

2. Create a Clear Information on How to Access Help

to provide and socialise a clear step-by-step procedure on how students and staff could report sexual misconduct case and where/how to seek access help in one main platform, separated from the reporting procedure of bullying and non-sexual harassments.

3. Have a compulsory consent training by Michaelmas Term 2021.

HandsOffLSE team is working along with the Student Union officers in pushing these changes. We however urgently need your help, as a student, staff or SU society in helping us pressure LSE to create these changes as soon as possible.
